WIC clients receive encouragement and instruction in breastfeeding. Learning to breastfeed your newborn is a bonding experience, and we are here to help if challenges come up.
Services Offered
WIC helps clients learn why breastfeeding is a healthy start for their baby, how to breastfeed while working, Dad's role in supporting breastfeeding, tips for teens who breastfeed, how to pump and store breast milk, and much more. If needed, breastfeeding women may be provided breast pumps free of charge.

Breastfeeding Award of Excellence
Island County Public Health WIC has received the Elite Breastfeeding Award of Excellence from the USDA for their exemplary Breastfeeding support program for 2025. The elite award is the highest award that can be received, and it follows their gold award in 2024.
The goal of the Breastfeeding Support program, also known as Breastfeeding Peer Counseling program, is to increase breastfeeding rates through promotion and support. To qualify for the elite award the program needs to be able to answer yes to 36 questions regarding policies, program-specific support offered, promotion efforts and also maintain at least a 40% exclusive breastfeeding rate. The Island County Public Health WIC Nutrition program had a breastfeeding initiation rate of 98.3% January-June 2024 (WA state initiation rate 92.1%), and July-Dec 2024 it was 92.9% (WA state was at 92%).
