Food Establishment Inspections
The Island County Food Safety Program conducts unannounced routine inspections of food establishments based on the risk category assigned to food establishments. Inspection report data from inspections conducted in 2023 will be posted to the website (see map a bottom of page).
If an inspection report is unavailable or needed for an inspection prior to 2023, you may request to review a full copy of the inspection report at the food establishment or request a copy by e-mail at foodsafety@islandcountywa.gov. Food establishments must notify customers that a full copy of their report is available for review by posting a sign or placard in an area conspicuous to the public.
Understanding Report Data
These records provide a snapshot of the day and time of the inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term compliance of an establishment. The conditions and violations documented during a food establishment inspection may have been corrected since the last date of inspection. New violations may have developed since the inspection was completed.
Inspection Types
- Routine Inspection – regular unannounced inspection of a food establishment.
- Re-Inspection – required unannounced inspection following a routine inspection when a food establishment has more than 50 RED points, more than 100 total points, or following a permit suspension due to an imminent health hazard closure.
Violation Types
- RED High Risk Factors (#1-27) are improper practices or procedures identified as the most prevalent contributing factors of foodborne illness or injury.
- BLUE Low Risk Factors (#28 – 50) are preventive measures to control the addition of pathogens, chemicals, and physical objects into foods.
Inspection Scoring
- Points – Demerits are totaled based on the relative public health risk associated with a specific violation.
- RED Points – The total number of demerits for out of compliance RED High Risk Factors (#1-27).
- Total points - The total number of demerits for out of compliance RED High Risk Factors (#1-27) and BLUE Low Risk Factors (#28 – 50).
Imminent Health Hazards
An imminent health hazard is defined as a significant threat or danger to health that is considered to exist when there is evidence sufficient to show that a product, practice, circumstance, or event creates a situation that requires immediate correction or cessation of operation to prevent injury based on a fire, flood, extended interruption of electrical or water service, sewage backup, misuse of poisonous or toxic material, onset of an apparent foodborne disease outbreak, gross insanitary occurrence or condition, or other circumstance that might endanger public health.
