Records Requests

Island County District Court is committed to openness, transparency and a guiding principal that justice is administered through an open and public court system.  Access to judicial records is part of the open and public court system.  As in all Courts, in the State of Washington, access to judicial records are governed by general rules.

Access to judicial records is governed by court rules and not the public records act (PRA). Requests for judicial records are broken down into two types of records.  The first type of records request is for "court records".  These requests are the most common and deal with records or proceedings for specific cases heard by the court.  The second type of requests are for administrative records. These records deal with management, supervision or administration of the judicial branch.

Judicial records request are governed by General Rules.  Specifically, GR31 (Access to Court Records), GR 15 (Destruction, Sealing and Redaction of Court Records) and sometimes GR 22 (Access to Family Law and Guardianship Court Records). Judicial Administrative records are governed by GR 31.1.
