Extreme Heat

During extreme heat your body works harder to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death. Humidity can increase the feeling of heat. Extreme heat is especially dangerous for older adults, children, sick, or overweight individuals.

You can prepare before a heat wave to help lessen the impact.

Prepare Before

  • Learn about the signs of heat illness
  • Identify places in the community where you can go to get cool. In Island County this would be the Sno-Isle libraries or local senior centers.
  • Cover your windows with curtains
  • Use weather strip on your doors and windows
  • Install an AC unit

During

  • Never leave people or pets in a closed vehicle
  • Take cool showers or baths
  • Wear loose, light colored clothing
  • Use your oven less
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid high energy activities
  • Check on your neighbors, family members, and seniors
