Risk Management & Safety

The goal of risk management is to identify, assess and proactively act against potential risks or threats that could cause a negative impact on our community and constituents. Island County is a member of the Washington Counties Risk Pool (WCRP) along with 24 other counties. As a member of the risk pool, Island County benefits from joint purchasing of insurance, claims handling and training opportunities for staff.

Risk Management’s Responsibilities Include:

  • Processing and investigation of claims made against the county.
  • Managing insurance coverage that includes liability, property, terrorism, crime, and cyber policies.
  • Directing loss control programs that include contract review and overseeing claims against negligent third parties that damage county property. 
  • Administration of the Safety and Accident Prevention program across the county.

Filing a Claim

Tort Claim Forms can be submitted to Risk Management in person, electronically or via mail. When submitting the claim, be certain to provide specific details about your damage or loss. Include the dates, times, witnesses and any additional supporting documents. Supporting documents include but are not limited to estimates, digital photographs, receipts and other agency reports. Documents submitted as part of a claim are subject to public disclosure laws.

What Happens After a Claim is Filed?

Risk Management along with a Claims Analyst from WCRP will investigate your claim. The investigation into your claim begins when we receive the claim for damages. Additional information may be requested to assist with investigating the claim. At the completion of the investigation, you will receive communication from our office detailing one of the three following outcomes: payment for damages, transfer to another responsible party or denial of the claim.
