Source Protection

To prevent contamination of the aquifer and at the well, wells should be properly sited and constructed, regularly inspected and maintained, and the area around the well(s) should be protected. The protection zone around the well should be 100 feet in every direction.

Inspect & protect:

  • Check for cracks or leaks in the cap, seal, and around the casing, and repair if found
  • Ensure the vent screen is intact
  • Test water quality regularly AND if there are any changes in taste, color, or odor
  • Measure and track the static water level
  • Protect pipes from freezing temperatures
  • Keep the area around the well free of fertilizers, pesticides, fuels, garbage, animal waste, and other possible pollution sources
  • Limit pesticide and fertilizer use
  • Regularly inspect and maintain septic systems, and pump when needed
  • If applicable, ensure legal agreements are in place with neighboring properties to protect the area around the well
