Cultus Bay Road Slide Update

A surficial slide occurred along Cultus Bay Road on March 20th 2017. The slide comes up to the edge of the road pavement.  As a precaution, the county reduced the road to one lane traffic in this area.  This section of the road will remain one lane over the next few months, until a repair is completed. It is fully anticipated that the road will reopen to two lane traffic.

Steps in the repair sequence include:

Check_mark.pngSlide reviewed on-site by geotechnical engineers
Check_mark.pngMeasure and Evaluate soils
Geotechnical engineers design a repair to support the road based on the soil evaluation and site conditions.
Order the specialized materials identified in the design
Island County crews complete the repair later this summer and reopen the road to two lane traffic

Surficial slides (surface material sliding) are fairly common on Whidbey Island, especially at this time of year.  Over the years, the county has had to construct similar road repairs at many other sites.
